🧩 Overlapping Tasks in InTakt: Setup & Use Guide
Overlapping tasks lets you create flow between activities by having one task begin before the previous one fully completes. This is critical when building takt-based schedules with realistic transitions—especially when some tasks can begin earlier due to partial completions or different crew demands.
🛠️ How to Add Task Overlaps in InTakt
- Go to the schedule view
- Click on the task you want to overlap.
- In the plan tab, choose “Edit Links”.
- Define the Overlap
- Enter a positive lag value to make it start earlier (i.e., overlap).
- For example, +2 days means this task will start 2 days before the prior one ends.
- You can enter this between any two tasks—not just parent/child.
- Save & Review Timeline
- You'll see the overlapping tasks adjust visually in the schedule.
- The downstream task bar will shift left, while respecting constraints and locked progress.
💡 Pro tip: For consistent overlaps between tasks and their predecessors across all zones, you can set them directly in the takt settings.
🧠 Important Notes on Logic
- Positive lag = overlap
Think: “start sooner” despite the predecessor still in progress.
- Negative lag = delay
Rarely used in InTakt—our system promotes cleaner, forward-looking schedules with buffer integrity.
- Overlaps can be layered
You can apply multiple overlapping relationships across chains of tasks.
🚧 Why Use Overlaps?
- Reduce idle time between trades.
- Start faster when prior work is partially complete.
- Handle different task durations without breaking flow.
